Obama Birth Certificate: Donald Trump Takes Credit for Its Release

Obama Birth Certificate: Donald Trump Takes Credit for Its Release

Now that President Barack Obama has released his original birth certificate -- proving that he was indeed born in Hawaii and thus legally fit to occupy the Oval Office -- will Donald Trump shut up about it?

If only! Not surprisingly, the real-estate mogul turned presidential hopeful is now taking credit for forcing Obama's hand.

"Today I'm very proud of myself, because I've accomplished something that no one else has been able to accomplish," Trump said at a news conference in New Hampshire on Wednesday morning. "Our president has finally released a birth certificate. I want to look at it, but I hope it's true, so that we can get on to much more important matters... But he should have done it a long time ago." Of course, he had to toot his own horn a bit more. "But I am really honored to have played such a big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue," he added.

Funny how Trump has been bashing anybody who questioned his birther views (including Jerry Seinfeld and Robert De Niro), and now he's claiming he just wanted to "get rid of the issue." Also, he apparently thinks that if he "got a look at it" he can personally verify the birth certificate's authenticity. "We have to see... is it real? Is it proper? What's on it? But I hope it checks out beautifully," he says. But hey, that's Trump for you. (He probably also thinks Obama would have to resign if he told him "You're fired.")

When President Obama released the birth certificate on Wednesday, explained his reasoning by saying, "We do not have time for this silliness. I've been puzzled at the degree to which this (birther story) just kept on going." The president went on to say that the United States has "some enormous challenges" to meet, and "we're not going to be able to if we spend time vilifying each other. We're not going to be able to do it if we just make stuff up and pretend that facts are not facts. We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers."

As for the main "carnival barker" himself, Trump has already moved on to a new conspiracy theory. "I heard (Obama) was a terrible student, terrible," Trump said on Monday, according to MSNBC. "How does a bad student go to Columbia and then to Harvard? I'm thinking about it, I'm certainly looking into it. Let him show his records."

Here we go again...
