Employees must feel secure enough at work to be able to reveal any health conditions to their managers.

Research by Diabetes UK revealed that nearly one million British people are estimated to keep their condition a secret because they are concerned about the effects it may have on their career prospects.

Almost a quarter of workers with the disease are thought to be worried about potential discrimination because they fear colleagues and managers will believe they developed the condition due to unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Keeping important health issues private can damage an employee's physical and mental wellbeing, which is likely to lead in poor performance and low levels of productivity.

It is the responsibility of bosses and managers to communicate that an employee will not be punished with prejudice or a lack of career advancement possibilities because of health and wellbeing factors.

The national charity has warned that Britain could experience a dramatic increase in the number of people suffering from diabetes as over four million are expected to be affected by the condition by 2025.

If employers are concerned about the health of their workforce, then they should educate them about the potential risks of leading an unhealthy lifestyle and encourage them to eat better and become more active.

Providing free fruit is a simple way to promote healthy eating as workers will be more likely to eat an apple as opposed to a sugary snack if it is readily available at no cost to them.

Establishing sports clubs or taking employees out for a weekly healthy lunch will help boost workplace morale at the same time as demonstrating the benefits of staying in shape.

Employees will be less likely to be absent from work if they are in good physical shape and this will have a direct impact on mental health, which should enable an improvement in overall performance levels.

If an organisation is concerned that their employees are not working to their full potential, then they should employ the services of performance improvement consulting experts.

Performance improvement consulting professionals are able to use management expertise to get the best out of employees by examining how an organisations works as a whole.

Management consultants are ideally placed to advise businesses how to deal with organisational problems by applying cutting-edge thinking and methodologies to evaluate which processes need improving.

Applying proven theory and techniques can allow business owners to discover the potential that may be hidden within their company.
