Nintendo shares plunge after 3DS price cut (AP)

TOKYO ? Shares of Nintendo Co. took a beating Friday, losing more than a fifth of their value at one point, after the Japanese video game giant announced a worldwide price cut for its new 3DS in an effort to salvage poor sales.

The move spooked investors and analysts, who had expected a quarterly loss but were taken aback by the severity of Nintendo's woes.

The stock fell more than 20 percent in the morning but pared losses in the afternoon. It closed down 12.2 percent at 12,290 yen.

Nintendo on Thursday posted a net loss of 25.5 billion yen ($324 million) in the April-June period, almost on par with its loss a year earlier. Sales during the quarter slumped more than 50 percent.

The numbers forced Nintendo to slash its profit forecast for the full fiscal year through March by more than 80 percent.

The Kyoto-based company blamed its lackluster performance on a dearth of hit titles for the Wii and 3DS handheld device, as well as a strong yen. Analysts say Nintendo's problems run deeper.

The 3DS got off to a solid start when it launched in February to high hopes. But it has fizzled since then. The company moved just 710,000 units in the latest quarter, compared with 3.61 million in its debut quarter. Sales of the regular DS and Wii also fell sharply.

To fuel momentum, Nintendo decided it needed to cut prices just five months after it launched the 3-D version of its popular DS.

The device will cost 15,000 yen in Japan starting Aug. 11, down from 25,000 yen. In the U.S., the price drops to $169.99 from $249.99 on Aug. 12.

JPMorgan immediately downgraded its rating on Nintendo shares to "Underweight."

"The launch of the new 3DS has stalled and the hardware price cut so early into release is an unprecedented act, highlighting that management's confidence in their contents is not enough to push through into Christmas 2011," said JPMorgan analyst Hiroshi Kamide in his report.

It took almost three years for the company to lower the price on the best-selling Wii for the first time, and that was by $50.

Nintendo's recent missteps underscore the Kyoto-based company's struggles in adapting to a gaming market that has evolved since the Wii revolutionized the gaming industry when it launched five years ago.

The Wii, with its motion-sensing controls, expanded gaming to casual users and even non-gamers like seniors. The console flew off shelves, and Nintendo's biggest problem at the time was keeping up with demand.

Now it must contend with the rise of smartphones and social networks, which have lured millions of casual gamers around the world and spawned smash hits such as Rovio Mobile's "Angry Birds."

So far, Nintendo doesn't seem to have a good answer.

Nomura Securities also cut its rating on Nintendo's stock one notch to "Neutral." Analyst Yuta Sakurai asks, "Has Nintendo lost its way?"

He commends the price cut as a bold decision that is likely to boost sales. But it will hit earnings hard. And even if Nintendo's next major launch ? the Wii U ? goes smoothly, the company's profits are unlikely to reach anywhere near the levels during the Wii's peak, he said.

"We think Nintendo will have to radically change its tactics if it is to once again increase the size of the gaming population," Sakurai's report said.

China defends carrier plans, neighbors fret over (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's neighbors are worried its aircraft carrier program may in time intimidate regional rivals but its military on Thursday defended the plan as vital for maritime security.

A day after China confirmed it was refitting an old Soviet vessel, and sources told Reuters it was building two of its own carriers, the official Liberation Army Daily stressed the mix of patriotic glory-seeking and future security worries behind the decision.

China's humiliations at the hands of Western powers in the past centuries "left the Chinese people with the deep pain of having seas they could not defend, helplessly eating the bitter fruit of being beaten for being backward," said a front-page editorial in the paper.

That trend is changing as Beijing ramps up its military spending while Washington discusses cutting its much larger defense budget. Growing Chinese military reach is triggering regional jitters that have fed into longstanding territorial disputes, and could speed up military expansion across Asia.

In the past year, China has had run-ins at sea with Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines. The incidents -- boat crashes and charges of territorial incursions -- have been minor, but the diplomatic reaction often heated.

"The issue of transparency regarding China's defense policy and its military expansion itself are concerns not only for Japan but for the region and the international community," Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said on Thursday.

In the 2012 budget submitted to Congress this week, the Philippines wants to raise military spending to 8 billion pesos ($190 million) per year from a previous 5 billion.

"(China's military modernization) serves as a clarion call for the Philippines to also upgrade its military capability to patrol its waters," said Rommel Banlaoi, executive director at the Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research.

The Chinese carrier program could fuel the drive for submarines in Southeast Asia, said Rory Medcalf, program director of International Security at the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney.

"There is already a submarine race, or submarine capability competition, in the region. This could add to that dynamic but I do not think it will be fundamental driver of it," he said.

COUNTERMEASURES

Japan's plan to boost the number of its submarines to 22 from 16, announced last year, was mainly a response to China's naval buildup, said Narushige Michishita, associate professor at Japan's National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.

"Japan is already taking some countermeasures," he said.

As well as refitting the old Soviet-era carrier bought from Ukraine in 1998, China is building two indigenous aircraft carriers as part of a broad modernization program, sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

"Putting it in the overall context of China's expanding and modernizing military, there is some cause for concern," said Daniel Pinkston of the International Crisis Group in Seoul.

South Korea disputes territory with China, which is the major backer of the principal threat to security on the Korean peninsula, the North.

Taiwan, the self-ruled island China claims as its own and has never renounced the use of force to recover, will also be watching closely. It warned again last week about Beijing's growing military threat.

"In the previous 60 years, the threat to Taiwan was all from the west," said Alexander Huang, professor of strategic studies at Taipei's Tamkang University. "But with a moving platform, China can pose a threat to Taiwan from the eastern side, which means that Taiwan is threatened from all directions."

Others point to India, China's great rival as an emerging Asian economic and military powerhouse.

"If the Chinese leave the west Pacific, there's only one areas they're interested in, the Indian Ocean. In that sense, competition with (India) is inevitable," said Raja Menon, a former rear admiral in the Indian navy.

China's Liberation Army Daily identified future risks as a rationale for the carrier program, which will take many years to create an operational carrier force.

"The struggle to win maritime interests is increasingly intense," the editorial added. A powerful navy is "an inevitable choice for protecting China's increasingly globalised national interests," said the paper.

President Hu Jintao has made the navy a keystone of China's military ramp-up, and the carriers will be among the most visible signs of the country's rising military prowess.

China has repeatedly denied its military modernization is for anything other than defensive purposes, pointing out it that it spend far less than the United States on its military. ($1 = 42.110 Philippine Pesos)

Police allege the man spent up to 20 hours a day on his home computer as he worked on the attack, motivated by ego after failing to secure a job in the IT sector.

"The Australian Federal Police will allege in court that this person acted with an extreme and unusual level of malice and with no regard to the damage caused, indiscriminately targeting both individuals and companies," said Gaughan.

He is due to appear in court Wednesday charged with one count of unauthorised modification of data to cause impairment, and 48 counts of unauthorised access to, or modification of restricted data.

Effective January 1, 2011 a new law was imposed by the Commonwealth of Virginia allowing a 100% real estate tax exemption for qualifying disabled armed forces veterans and their spouses.

Pursuant to Article X, Section 6-A of the Constitution of Virginia, the General Assembly exempted from taxation the real property, including the joint real property of husband and wife, of any Veteran who has been approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to have a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability, and who occupies the real property as his/her primary place of residence.

The surviving spouse of a Veteran eligible for the exemption shall also qualify for the exemption, so long as the death of the Veteran occurred on or after January 1, 2011, the surviving spouse does not remarry and the surviving spouse continues to occupy the real property as his/her primary place of residence.

In order to receive this benefit the veteran is required to have a letter of disability from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (1-800-827-1000). the letter will have specific wording that is required by the Commonwealth of Virginia for this exemption. the letter will NOT be automatically provided to the veteran, he or she must request this letter. The ?SPRING? section opens with ?STARTERS? such as ?STRAWBERRY LEMONADE? (pages 16-17), ?GREEK SALAD? (page 18) or ?SMOKED BLUE CAT PATE? (page 20) made from catfish among other recipes. ?SOUPS AND SANWICHES? follows in the section and opens with ?GRILLED SALMON SANDWICH WITH LEMON-DILL MAYO on pages 26-27. Several more suggestions follow before the section moves into ?SALADS? such as ?POACHED EGG AND SPINIACH SALAD? (pages 30 -32) among others. Also present are various dressings one can make instead of buying something at the store.

?MAIN DISHES? comes next in the ?SPRING? section and starts off with a recipe for ?BLACK BEAN AND SPINIACH BURRITOS? on pages 40 and 41. That leads into ?GRILLED PORK CHOPS IN ZUCCHINI AND PEPPERS? on pages 42-43, ?CRAWFISH (OR SHRIMP) ETOUFFEE? on pages 45-46 and others. If you have a main dish, you need ?VEGTABLES AND SIDES? and that comes next and opens with ?RADISH TOP PASTA? on pages 50-51 before moving on to ?GINGER-SESAME STIR-FRIED ASPARAGUS? on pages 52-53. Personally, I am not sure enough of anything could be done to make asparagus edible enough for me to eat it.

A couple more vegetable recipes lead the reader to ?BREAD AND SUCH? starting on page 59. Of course, there is a french toast recipe. This one is on pages 60-61 and titled ?PINEAPPLE ?ORANGE FRENCH TOAST? and uses your oven for the cooking process after you soak your bread in his concoction. There are a couple of other recipes in this section but it is one of the shorter deals in the book.

?DESSERTS? are also covered and start with ?BANANA DELIGHT? on pages 64-65. It features the required bananas, pie crust, cream cheese pudding, coconut and pecans among other items. Several other dessert recipes bring this section to a close.

Each recipe features simple instructions, an ingredient list, and the number of servings it makes. Most recipes also come with tips on making the item or growing the ingredient(s) needed along with a colorful picture of the finished item either by itself or at a lavishly decorated table clustered with several more versions of the same dish. This same format is followed in terms of opening with ?STARTERS? and progressing through ?SOUPS AND SANDWICHES? etc., followed through the remainder of the book in the seasonal sections titled ?SUMMER,? ?FALL,? and ?WINTER.?

Growing your own vegetables and hers is a key point in the book and sometimes that creates recipes that are absent meat and rely on cheeses for protein. One such way is in ?THE GARDEN SANDWICH? on pages 88-89 where bread, herbs and salad items, goat cheese and a couple of other things combine together to make one heck of a sandwich. Fresh herbs, greens and vegetables are a key ingredient in nearly every dish and are presented in many different ways to please the most finicky eater throughout the book.

Thoughts on Selecting a Prostate Cancer Surgeon

Prostate cancer has been confirmed with a biopsy, and you have eliminated active surveillance, radiation and other treatment options. You?re now planning to have surgery?but who should you pick? This is the most common situation that I deal with day to day, helping newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients and their families.

The bad news?

• ?We are now faced with cancer, and want the most successful treatment, with the least amount of side effects.?
• With surgery, we are dealing with ?prime real estate,? and the possible side effects concern vital functions, namely going to the bathroom & having sex.

The good news?

• Prostate cancer is not a rare, mysterious disease that would effectively require seeing a renowned expert at a large, distant academic university hospital. Prostate cancer is so common that there are plenty of local experts who can offer the latest technology and have many patients that have successfully been through prostate surgery.
• We find prostate cancer so early, with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test ?& digital rectal exam (DRE) screenings, that our goal in treatment is curative. Most men will not die of prostate cancer, but at least we can eliminate this risk factor with treatment, once found.
• ?Let?s just get rid of this cancer, so we can just get on with our lives.?

?My advice?

I usually advise patients to approach selecting a surgeon, just like hiring a contractor to work on a project for you. You are basically hiring this person to work for you (the project = taking out your prostate!), and follow up with you (usually at least for five years after surgery). So, it is important to consider all the pros and cons, during your ?interviews? or consultations with these surgeons.

Of course, there are clinical aspects to consider (and please see links below for some common questions to ask your doctor):

• Physician?s experience / expertise, as well as of his team (usually includes at least one assistant surgeon, plus a physician?s assistant and/or advanced practice nurse)
• Hospital?s experience with prostate surgery
• Side effects
• Clinical outcomes / success rates

I think the non-clinical aspects are just as important to consider:

• How easy is it to contact the surgeon with questions/concerns? (email option? phone?)
• How clearly are things explained? Is it easy to ask questions at the visit?
• Are there patients willing to share their experience of surgery and recovery with the surgeon, and are they available to help you learn more?
• Do you have a good rapport with the surgeon? Good gut-level feeling?

Statistics

There are plenty of studies out there, covering everything from success rates after surgery, to the various rates of side effects in urinary and erectile function, and it can be very easy to get lost in these numbers (e.g. ?analysis paralysis?).

Statistics can help with big picture issues, but unless the statistic is 0% or 100%, I would not hinge any important decision upon a few statistics alone. The difference between 30% and 90% is inherently significant, but if I?m presented with options that are 89%, 93%, and 95% successful ? all three are viable options.

Making a decision involves looking at all aspects, perhaps using a decision making tool or checklist (see example in PAMF Prostate Cancer Notebook (Chapters 3-4 on decision making) to make sure that you have addressed all the aspects of making such an important decision as selecting a surgeon for your prostate cancer.

Often men meet with more than one physician. Whether it is two physicians or five physicians, once they start hearing the same things again in the answers, I usually tell them they have effectively hit ?data saturation,? and they are probably ready to make that final decision.

Hindsight

Judging from the feedback I?ve received from patients after surgery, the men that are most satisfied with their selection (regardless of the outcome) are those who were very thorough in their consideration of all the options and possibilities. They avoided the dreaded ?woulda, coulda, shoulda? phenomenon! They realized that the priority was getting the cancer out, and any side effects that result can be managed as best as possible with their surgeon.

In the words of one of?my former patients, ?the most important ?side effect? is that you get to live??
