Maria Kanellis Posts Several Twitter Messages During E!'s "Total Divas" Slamming The Bella Twins

Former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis continued her online assault of The Bella Twins' personal characters during E!'s Total Divas premiere as The First Lady of ROH posted numerous messages on Twitter slamming the twin duo.

During the episode, Nikki and Brie referred to themselves as veterans in the WWE Divas locker room. Kanellis responded, "Hahahaha ha!!!! The Bellas are vets?" Minutes later, she re-tweeted a fan message stating, "The audacity these untalented broads have. Then you have Nattie who rocks and is an absolute sweetheart."

A fan then asked Kanellis, "Are the Bellas talented at anything?" She responded, "Yes. Can you guess what?"

Kanellis then sent out the following message to her Twitter followers in reference to Nikki and Brie referring to themselves as veterans in WWE: "Every time the Bellas say they are vets it makes me want to vomit!"

Midway through the show, Nikki was depicted as concerned that her relationship with John Cena was not progressing as fast as her sister Brie's partnership with Daniel Bryan and asked the Cenation leader about their status over dinner. Cena dodged the marriage query, but assured Nikki that she's the only woman for him. In response to the scene, Kanellis wrote, "N Bella, "We've been together for 5 minutes, lets get married." JC, "My divorce hasn't been finalized, I can't."

In the show-closing angle, The Bella Twins and The Funkadactyls shared in disappointment that their scheduled match at WrestleMania 29 was cut due to time constraints. Kanellis taunted the Bella sisters over having their dreams dashed, writing, "Awwwww poor Bellas. Kharma is a b---h. @TotalDivasE but I feel bad for the Funkadactyls."

Though Kanellis posted multiple messages burying The Bella Twins, she felt Total Divas was a "great show."

Testicular cancer survival rate reaches 96%

A cure for testicular cancer ?is almost a reality?, with nearly all sufferers beating the disease, according to a cancer expert.

More than 96% of men now survive testicular cancer compared with less than 70% in the 1970s, new figures from Cancer Research UK show.

Survival for testicular cancer has risen by almost 30% in the last 40 years, with nearly all men now beating the disease.

Cancer Research UK released the figures to highlight the success of research in the fight against cancer and encourage people to support their ?Beat Cancer Sooner? campaign.

In Scotland, about 230 people are diagnosed with testicular cancer every year and it is the most common cancer in men aged 15-49.

Cancer Research UK chief executive Dr Harpal Kumar said: ?A clear success story in cancer research has been the drug cisplatin, which our scientists helped to develop.

Dedicated

?This is helping almost all men with testicular cancer to beat the disease and is a shining example of what we can achieve through dedicated research.

?For some types of cancer, the word ?cure? is almost a reality - 96% of men with testicular cancer are now cured.

?But it?s important we recognise the 4% who aren?t surviving the disease, as well as the fact that we still need treatments to be kinder to patients in the future.

?It?s only by doing more research that we can bring forward the day when we are able to beat all types of cancer.?

Alex Watson, of Lenzie in East Dunbartonshire, survived testicular cancer after being diagnosed aged 23.

Mr Watson, now 41, who lives with his civil partner Peter, said: ?I feel I was incredibly fortunate to be cured and survive testicular cancer.

?Years ago, testicular cancer is something that you wouldn?t have survived - I did know of someone who was diagnosed at the same time as me who died from the disease.

Discomfort

?It?s so good that people are getting the all-clear and are surviving, but I do think more needs to be done in terms of making sure people get better and kinder treatments.?

Martin Ledwick, head information nurse at Cancer Research UK, said: ?The most common symptom of testicular cancer is a lump or swelling in one of the testicles.

?Although most lumps in the testicle won?t turn out to be cancer, it?s important you get symptoms checked out as early as possible as this gives the best chance of cure.

?Get used to how your testicles look and feel normally, and if you notice a lump, swelling or persistent discomfort then go and see your GP.?

(AP) ? A system of thunderstorms across western North Carolina stalled on Saturday and dumped about a foot of rain on the area, causing power outages and flash floods that swamped homes and washed out roads and bridges.

More than a dozen people were rescued from flooded vehicles in the region. No injuries were reported.

Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright urged residents to stay indoors and away from flooded roads, The Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1buP7OY).

"This is a time for all of us to be very careful and patient," he said. "The cleanup is going to take a while."

Parts of Catawba and surrounding counties were under water Saturday. Catawba County officials said some of the worst flash flooding in decades followed a nearly stationary weather system that dumped 10 inches of rain in about six hours.

High Shoals Lake in Catawba County rose nearly five feet over a 10-hour span. Officials said high water will move down the Catawba River later Saturday, possibly causing more flooding. The rain had stopped in the area by Saturday afternoon. The National Weather Service said the heavy rain will move east across the western piedmont of North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina.

Several miles of Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County was closed for a short time due to high water. Traffic moved at a crawl along both I-85 and Interstate 77 north of Charlotte as drivers navigated water several inches deep in spots. In Lincoln County, there were reports of up to three feet of water covering roads.

Duke Energy reported about 5,000 power outages.

It is at least the fourth major flash flooding event in the Charlotte region in the past month. Highway officials already are working to repair more than a dozen Charlotte-area roads damaged by previous flooding.

Walmart Losing To Quirky Florida Based Publix ? Employee Owned Company Touted By Forbes As ?Wal-Mart Slayer?

Publix_Bag

Walmart, its very name brings with it an image of a soulless corporation, a company which abuses its employees down so much that they will rip the company to shreds on their own internal website when asked. A company reliant on government assistance to keep its employees able to even eat. It is a recipe for disaster. And those who follow the teachings of Milton Friedman and other objectivist economists would try and explain that this is absolutely required for a successful company. But don?t tell that to Publix, which now sits as the most profitable grocer in the United States, holding a remarkable 52.8% of the grocery market in highly competitive Florida, against Walmart?s 14.5%.

How does Publix do it? Are they even more soul crushing, seeking to demoralize employees to the point that they are wage slaves, like McDonald?s does? The opposite, Publix is an employee owned corporation. You read that right, employee owned. The company does well, then the employees do well. This gives your average employee of Publix a stake in improving the companies bottom line, thanks to regular dividends. They do this by retaining customers, through excellent customer service. Even Forbes magazine has come to recognize that the Publix business model is a ?Walmart Slayer.? And to add to the fears of the Beast of Bentonville, Publix is expanding into new markets, just as other companies are copying the Publix model.

Publix, through its focus on its staff and customer service, is able to beat Walmart?s shareholder returns, with a compound growth of 18% per year, as opposed to Walmart?s 10.5% by Walmart. Of course, Walmart is a publicly traded company, while Publix is owned by its employees, so if someone wishes to invest in Publix, they would first need to begin working for Publix, and their rate of ownership is based on their wages. This encourages the hardest workers, those who dedicate themselves to the company, giving them a real stake in the company as they labor.

Publix began 1930 by George Jenkins, and was mocked by other grocers when he opened for offering amenities like chairs to relax in and air conditioning for the customers, combined with award-winning customer service. His store prospered during the Great Depression due to this employee and customer centered model of doing business. Today, you still find this focus, with Publix offering service to their customers such as their Youtube channel full of helpful cooking tips and recipes, a specialized natural and organic line of Publix brand goods, even having a small sit down cafe which remains highly popular with its customers. The Publix baggers walk the customers groceries out to their cars, and refuse tips. It is all part of the Publix experience.

The tragedy for Walmart is that the very model which Publix is an excellent example of, was once touted by Sam Walton himself. He firmly believed that workers who were invested in the company became more motivated, and motivated employees brought in happy customers. Sam Walton would be spinning in his grave if he were to read what the employees of his company thought of it today.

One may think that Walmart may operate a higher profit margin, but then they would be wrong. Forbes covers how Publix has a net profit margin of 5.6%, far higher than Walmart?s 3.8%. Other companies engage in an employee-first approach, such as Trader Joes and Costco, but Publix does this with an employee-owned focus, giving them a leg up over the competition.

Walmart may have met its match, and its name is Publix.

Proposed DHS No. 2 to face lawmakers' questions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's pick to be the No. 2 official at the Homeland Security Department faces tough questioning from lawmakers about an investigation into his role in helping a company run by former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's brother secure a foreign investor visa.

Alejandro Mayorkas, the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, was to testify Thursday at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. His nomination hit a snag Tuesday when The Associated Press first reported that the Homeland Security Inspector General's Office was investigating Mayorkas' role in helping secure a foreign investor visa for Tony Rodham's Gulf Coast Funds Management even after the application was denied and an appeal rejected.

In an email to lawmakers Monday, the IG's office said "at this point in our investigation, we do not have any findings of criminal misconduct."

Congressional officials briefed on the investigation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release details of the case publicly, said the visa was for a Chinese executive. Homeland Security and Citizenship and Immigration Services have not commented on the investigation.

Rodham's company said Tuesday it was not aware of the investigation or of any investor visa application being denied.

Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, the top Republican on the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, has called for Mayorkas' nomination to be put on hold pending the outcome of the IG's investigation.

In a prepared opening statement, the committee's chairman, Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del., acknowledged questions surrounding "Director Mayorkas' qualifications."

"At this point in time, we do not have all the facts," Carper said. He also said that it's "my understanding" that Mayorkas has not yet been intervidewed by the IG's office. He added that despite objections from Republicans, including Coburn, "This hearing will allow us to continue the process of vetting this nominee."

Aside from the controversy surrounding Mayorkas, Carper expressed confidence in his nomination.

"I have also taken the opportunity to review Mr. Mayorkas' FBI file, not once, but twice. Nothing in my conversations with Mr. Mayorkas or in my review of his FBI file has convinced me that we should not be holding this hearing today," Carper said.

According to the IG's office email to lawmakers, the FBI's Washington Field Office was told about the Mayorkas investigation in June after it inquired about Mayorkas as part of the White House background investigation for his nomination.

The investigation does not appear to have any direct ties to Clinton's tenure as secretary of state. Nonetheless, any hint of scandal or even the most tangential connection to Clinton, who is a possible 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, is likely to become fodder for Republican super PACs, which have sought to discredit her record while she maintains a lower profile with private speeches and work on a new book.

The international investor visa program run by USCIS, known as EB-5, allows foreigners to get visas if they invest $500,000 to $1 million in projects or businesses that create jobs for U.S. citizens. The amount of the investment required depends on the type of project. Investors who are approved for the program can become legal permanent residents after two years and can later be eligible to become citizens.

Even before the inspector general's investigation became public, two other congressional officials said several Republican members on the committee had planned to ask Mayorkas for more details about his role in the 2001 commutation by President Bill Clinton of the prison sentence of the son of Horacio Vignali, a Democratic Party donor in Los Angeles.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to because they were not authorized to comment on the committee's inquiry, said a background questionnaire submitted to Mayorkas in advance of the hearing pressed him for a detailed accounting of his actions in the weeks before the sentence was commuted on Clinton's last day in office.

Another of Hillary Rodham Clinton's brothers, Hugh Rodham, had been hired by Horacio Vignali to lobby for the commutation for his son, Carlos, who was serving a 15-year sentence for his conviction on three federal drug charges.

Mayorkas, who was a U.S. attorney in California at the time, told lawmakers during his 2009 confirmation hearing to head USCIS that "it was a mistake" to have talked to the White House about the request. The congressional officials said Mayorkas acknowledged in recent answers to his questionnaire that he also had telephoned a U.S. attorney in Minnesota at the time to check on the Vignali commutation matter.

The nomination took on new importance earlier this month when Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced she would be leaving the department, among the government's largest with 240,00 employees, in September to take over as president of the University of California.

Should Mayorkas be approved by the Senate, he almost certainly would lead the department until a permanent replacement for Napolitano was named. His promotion also would create a new leadership vacancy in a department already facing a leadership vacuum. With Napolitano's departure, 15 of the department's 45 top positions will either be filled with an acting official or be vacant altogether.

Kate Middleton probably spent less on childbirth than the average American woman

Estimated cost for stay at Kate Middleton's private birthing suite: $15,000. Cost of average delivery in the United States: $30,000.

In case you hadn't heard, Kate Middleton recently had a baby boy. The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth at the private Ludo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in central London, which, according to The Daily Mail, includes complimentary breakfast, satellite TV, internet access, and a comprehensive wine list.

The cost for such royal treatment?

SEE ALSO: Should Russia pay a price for its anti-gay laws?

A natural birth is pegged at ?4,965, or $7,621, for a one-night stay, with additional nights costing an extra ?1,000 each. A long stay by the Duchess could have cost her a whopping ?10,000, or just over $15,000, notes The Daily Mail.

That might seem like a princely sum, except when you consider that it is less than what the average U.S. hospital charges to deliver a baby in a non-exclusive room that, presumably, doesn't offer a selection of fine wines.

SEE ALSO: A tiny speck called Earth, as seen from Saturn

Elisabeth Rosenthal, who investigated the exceptionally high costs of U.S. childbirth for The New York Times last month, expressed her royal confusion on Twitter:

Rosenthal is referring to the average total price charged for a vaginal delivery in the United States, which was $30,000, with the average commercial insurer paying $18,329. Granted, we don't know what exactly is included in the Ludo Wing's $7,621 "normal delivery package," but it's still a luxury, private birthing suite charging less than the average U.S. hospital.

If we set aside the royal family, the picture gets even more depressing. At $9,975, the average American woman spends more than triple on childbirth than what the average British woman does. That is despite the fact, according to Rosenthal's report, that women do not get better care in the United States than they do in other developed countries.

SEE ALSO: The 10 best TV shows from the first half of 2013

The reason American deliveries cost so much is that pregnancies are billed item by item, unlike in Europe, where hospitals charge a flat free for childbirth.

"We?ve created incentives that encourage more expensive care, rather than care that is good for the mother,? Maureen Corry, executive director of Childbirth Connection, told Rosenthal.

SEE ALSO: Iraq's spectacular Abu Ghraib prison break: Is al Qaeda back?

Then, of course, there is the issue of what uninsured American women have to pay for childbirth. Ren?e Martin, whose health insurance didn't include maternity coverage, told The New York Times that her hospital quoted her a price as high as $45,000 for total maternity care.

Unlike Kate Middleton, however, she couldn't have the Royal Family pick up the tab.

Reid And Boehner On A Debt Limit Collision Course

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) each laid down incompatible positions on the debt limit Tuesday, possibly setting the stage for another round of brinksmanship this fall over whether the federal government will default on its obligations.

?We are not negotiating on the debt ceiling,? Reid told reporters. ?The President has said this. I?ve said it. And I don?t know how many more times we need to say that.?

He was responding to a question about whether he?d consider GOP demands such as defunding Obamacare or significantly cutting spending in exchange for raising the debt limit.

Just hours earlier, Boehner put down an equally categorical marker.

?We?re not going to raise the debt ceiling without real cuts in spending. It?s as simple as that,? he said. He floated the so-called ?Boehner rule? requiring dollar-for-dollar cuts, which Democrats acceded to in 2011 in order to raise the debt limit, as the right way to go.

Privately and publicly, White House officials insist that they won?t negotiate on the debt ceiling under any circumstances, and that it?s Congress? duty to make sure the United States continues to pay its bills. Burned by the failed deficit talks of 2011, senior Obama aides also don?t trust Boehner to deliver Republican votes even if he does want a deal. (A running joke in the White House is that Boehner couldn?t deliver a pizza.)

Boehner, in particular, faces huge challenges within his conference.

His leadership team backed down earlier this year in the face of Democrats? insistence that they won?t negotiate on the debt ceiling, convincing members to vote to increase temporarily the limit in exchange for forcing Senate Democrats to pass a budget. He now faces a conference full of vocal lawmakers who are demanding actual spending cuts and insist they won?t settle for anything less. Already aggrieved by the possibility of leadership violating the majority-of-the-majority principle on matters like immigration reform and the farm bill, they?re working to back Boehner into a corner.

Meanwhile, a significant faction of more moderate Senate Republicans, tired of going along with routine obstruction, are rising up against tea party conservatives and pushing for more cooperation with Democrats, be it on the budget, immigration or presidential nominees.

?I do think that some folks are starting to re-evaluate the consequence of giving a handful of very junior, very ideological Senators the unfettered ability to drive our side,? said an aide to a veteran Republican senator, speaking on condition of anonymity. ?I think we may have learned in the recent crisis that having the sheer volume of objections at the same time is not in our interests. It makes it harder to argue the high ground.?

All the while, Boehner has repeatedly insisted that default is not an option, leaving many Democrats to conclude that he?s bluffing by suggesting he won?t permit a debt limit increase. On Tuesday his spokesman Brendan Buck called on Democrats to compromise.

Krauthammer vs. Sally Kohn: Detroit Not A GOP Failure, 'It's Been Run By The Democrats For 60 Years'

SALLY KOHN: I think the cautionary tale out of this is that a number of folks will try and use Detroit falsely as an example to push more austerity, to really cram more austerity down the throats of the United States. Look, every study that supposedly said austerity and cutting spending in order to create growth was a good idea has been disproven. It has hurt England's economy and elsewhere. England, literally, they can't even save the bath water with the baby. And now they're going to try and use Detroit as an excuse to do more of this.

You know, look, Republicans unfortunately when the economy is good, they want to cut spending and taxes, and when the economy is bad they want to cut spending and taxes, that's just their answer everything. Here is where we need spending to help. That's just the reality.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: Sally, Detroit is not really an example of the failure of GOP economic policy. It's been run by the Democrats for 60 years, and you can cite all the studies about how bad austerity is, all you have to do is look at Detroit and you get an idea of how bad the absence of austerity is, it's a city in ruin.

I think that the reason that the administration is hesitant to even talk about a bailout is that it understands that Detroit is a precedent. The minute you step into a bailout in Detroit, you're going to get every city in the country lining up with a tin cup. And that's why even this administration, even this administration is going to hold back from doing this.

Study: Grants, scholarships top financial aid

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Parents are picking up less of their children's college costs while grants and scholarships now have the top role in paying the bills, according to a report released Tuesday by loan giant Sallie Mae.

Since the recession, more college-bound students have eliminated schools from their searches based on costs and have relied less on their parents once they get to campus, the report found. Worries such as tuition increases and job losses seem to have faded as the economy has improved, yet parents and students still make decisions on schools, majors and work schedules based on the price tag.

"We have moved into a post-recession reality in how people pay for college," said Sarah Ducich, Sallie Mae's senior vice president for public policy.

College spending was about $21,000 during 2012, down from a peak of $24,000 in 2010, according to the Sallie Mae-Ipsos Public Affairs report.

The annual survey of student financial aid found students earned about $6,300 in grants and scholarships to pay for college costs, taking the top spots from parents. Student loans were the third most common source to pick up the bill for courses, housing and books.

The average student borrowed $8,815 in federal loans.

The rate for those loans was the subject of debate in the Senate this week, as lawmakers consider a compromise that would offer some students lower rates for the next few years but would prescribe higher rates for future classes.

Last year, the average family turned to grants and scholarships to cover 30 percent of college costs. Parents' income and savings covered 27 percent of the bill and student borrowing covered 18 percent.

"Parents are willing to stretch themselves," Ducich said "It's not that they're willing to pay. It's that their income is not keeping up."

Parents' enthusiasm for college has not shriveled, though. The survey found 85 percent of parents saw college bills as an investment in their children's future.

"We're in a new normal where big ticket items like college, families will pay for them but won't stress about them too much," said Cliff Young, managing director at Ipsos.

One-fifth of parents added work hours to pay for college and half of students increased their work hours, too. The report found 57 percent of families said students were living at home or with relatives, up from 41 percent last year and 44 percent in 2011.

Among other strategies employed to deal with costs:

? One-fifth of students from low-income families chose to transfer to less expensive schools.

? About one-fifth of students also said they changed majors to fields that were expected to be more marketable upon graduation.

? In all, 67 percent of students and their families eliminated colleges at some stage during the application process because of costs, up from 58 percent in 2008.

"It forced them to adopt new behaviors of savings and ways to find nickels and dimes," Young said.

The tuition sticker price at public four-year colleges is up 27 percent beyond overall inflation over the last five years, according to the latest figures from a separate study from the College Board. This past year it rose nearly 5 percent to an average of $8,655 nationwide. Including room and board, the average sticker price at public colleges is now $17,860, and students pay on average $12,110. At private four-year colleges, the average full tuition price is now just under $40,000, with the average student paying $23,840.

What does that mean for the average college student?

About two-thirds of the national college class of 2011 had loan debt at graduation, and their debt averaged $26,600, according to the most recent figures from the California-based Institute for College Access and Success. That was an increase of about 5 percent from the class before them.

The Ipsos telephone poll was conducted between April 10 and May 9 with 1802 parents of 18 to 24-year-old undergraduate students and 800 undergraduate students aged 18 to 24. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Wind Energy Update: Germany Marks Intent in Offshore Wind Energy

LONDON (PRWEB) August 03, 2012

More than 20 offshore wind parks have been approved in the North Sea and three more in the Baltic, all outside the 12 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Inside the EEZ, four wind parks have been approved in the North Sea and two in the Baltic. In total, there are 4,700 turbines planned to be installed in the North Sea (capacity of 21,400 MW) and 508 turbines in the Baltics (capacity of 2,368 MW). Germany has already seen the completion of Alpha Ventus and BARD1 wind farms, both of which use some of the most advanced wind power equipment operational today.

Jon Harman, Head of Offshore Business at Wind Energy Update commented at a recent industry gathering on the state of the upcoming offshore wind projects Many industry experts believe offshore wind construction in the North Sea is going to be a real challenge for the industry.

With company preparations for wind projects ramping up, the need for answers on the offshore grid, financing and robust training programs in the region is critical. Germany appears to have really stepped up to the challenge with active Government support and serious industry movement he adds.

The installation of offshore wind farms in hostile, far shore, deep water environments can be a costly, technically difficult and potentially hazardous experience for both the company and its workforce. If costs are to remain within budget then careful plans, pre-construction preparation, supplier and contractor selection are all equally essential. In order to do that successfully a number of issues must be addressed. Now in its 4th year, the original Offshore Wind Construction, Installation and Commissioning conference (OWCIC) will examine and suggest solutions to these exact challenges.

OWCIC comes this year, not to London but to Hamburg, Germany the hive of offshore excitement for the next 5 years according to a recent Wind Energy Update survey. This construction specific conference will bring together the key developers, utilities, contractors, government representatives, and many more. Confirmed participants include E.ON Climate & Renewables, Vattenfall, Mainstream Renewable Power, BARD, RWE, C-Power, TenneT, and 50 Hertz. Car leasing is back with a vengeance - Fortune Features

By Doron Levin, contributor

Get one cheap.

Get one cheap.

FORTUNE -- The Newport Beach, California periodontist who trades regularly among the latest Mercedes, BMW and Lexus sedans is typical of a client that prefers to lease, rather than to buy, vehicles. Now her assistant, who keeps his Honda Civic for a long stretch, is leasing as well.

The recovering U.S. auto market has been characterized, in part, by a rising percentage of customers who are leasing cars, notably non-luxury buyers. Last year the percentage of those leasing reached 22%; this year it could break through 25%, according to Edmunds.com. Low interest rates and strong pricing for used cars are two factors behind the trend.

"Luxury brands have for a long time relied on leasing to maximize their sales volumes. Now mainstream brands are riding that wave, drawing buyers with the promise of lower monthly payments through leasing," says Jessica Caldwell, an analyst for Edmunds.com.

MORE:?Detroit's bankruptcy is an utter defeat

Many younger buyers have been attracted by lease deals because they can more easily understand a monthly payment and the simplicity of returning a vehicle after a set period of time?as opposed to a fixed price that is complicated by a down payment and several financing options. Many also like the option of buying the car at a set price at the end of the lease period.

But those holding the lease (often the automakers themselves) may get burned if the so-called residual value of the car?the projected price at the end of the lease period?doesn't live up to expectations due to a soft market for used vehicles. Sometimes automaker lending arms create low monthly payments and unrealistically high residuals to disguise what actually is a financial incentive to buy.

Monthly payments for lease vehicles are usually lower than payments for purchased vehicles that are financed with a loan. But (as Edmunds.com points out) if a motorist decides to drive a car for six years or more, the purchase of a slightly used vehicle is more cost efficient than new or leased vehicles.

MORE:?The subtle art of managing your annoying boss

Larry Dominique, president of ALG, a company that tracks residual values and lease rates, said "we have seen automakers that traditionally didn't lease, such as Hyundai and Kia, are embracing the practice due to increased residual values." Rising quality and tight availability of Korean brands has raised transaction prices of new vehicles, making used vehicle prices stronger as well.

A vehicle lease is an agreement whereby a third-party financial institution owns the car, the user of the vehicle agreeing to pay a monthly rate and return the vehicle after a specific period of time, with no more than a set number of miles on the odometer. The agreement usually contains a financial penalty for exceeding the mileage limit.

ALG is bullish on the continued increased in the strength of residual values, which comes from rising demand for vehicles. Used-car supply is tight, Dominique said, "which is causing an unnaturally high value on used cars. We don't expect the supply of used cars to return to where it was in 2007 [when the car market tanked] until 2017."

MORE:?Is there a silver lining for Detroit?

A big disadvantage of a vehicle lease, getting stuck for a long time with a vehicle you don't like, has an up-to-date digital remedy. For a fee, Swapalease.com matches motorists who want to get out of their lease with those who might be interested in assuming them.

The auto companies have too fresh a memory of the last collapse to tempt a new one with residual values that wildly unrealistic. Still the threat of a new bubble is never too distant, which is why lower and lower monthly payments may trigger alarm bells.

Calculating Base Casting Time and Energy Cost for Syntactic Magic

Still working out the details of my Elven Syntactic magic. I'm confused about something I came across in GURPS Thaumatology. In the section under Working The Effect, under Multiple Words, the text says "He [caster] gets to choose which verb and which noun will determine energy cost and time to cast" (Th186). However, earlier in the section Determining Base Energy Cost, under Verb-Noun Workings, the text says, "A working's cost is normally the sum of all the Words involved" (Th181). Under Casting Time, Verb-Noun Casting Times, it says, "The working's bast time requirement is the sum of the casting times for the constituent Words" (Th183).

So which is it?

ATD on the TV: Toasty Twitter, Amber Alerts, Dell and the NFL

This week members of the AllThingsD staff showed up live and in person on all sorts of channels. Should you want to see some of the week?s tech news highlights, rather than just read about them, watch these quick videos.

Mike Isaac turned up on CNBC with some smart answers to a somewhat silly question: ?Is Twitter toast??

Arik Hesseldahl joined WCBS to give some background on emergency cell phone alerts, after one woke up many New Yorkers in the middle of the night.

He was also on the BBC for a hit on the ongoing Dell saga, which he?s been covering on a more-than-daily basis.

And then our media guy Peter Kafka showed up a couple places to talk about a theory that Google or Apple might gain a foothold in TV by buying online broadcast rights for football. Here?s Peter on the Wall Street Journal?s Digits show, and Bloomberg?s audio podcast ?The Inside Scoop.?

Rethinking the Wetsuit

[unable to retrieve full-text content]symbolset writes "Apparently Australians have come up with the brilliant idea: if you don't want to be eaten by a shark, it's best to not go swimming in shark-infested waters in a seal costume. 'Scientists from the University of Western Australia, with designers Shark Attack Mitigation Systems (SAMS), have unveiled two new wetsuits that they say could save lives in the water. Based on a breakthrough discovery that sharks are colour-blind, one wetsuit, labelled the "Elude," is designed to camouflage a swimmer or diver in the sea. At the other extreme, the "Diverter" sports bold white and dark-blue stripes, and is intended to mirror nature's warning signs to ward off any potential shark attack.'"

Biden calls Brazil's Rousseff over NSA spying tensions

BRASILIA (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden called Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Friday to try to smooth tensions caused by allegations that the United States spied on Brazilian Internet communications, Rousseff's office said.

Latin America's largest nation has said Washington's explanations about the National Security Agency's secret surveillance programs have been unsatisfactory.

"He lamented the negative repercussions in Brazil and reiterated the U.S. government's willingness to provide more information on the matter," Rousseff's communications minister, Helena Chagas, told reporters after the 25-minute telephone call.

Biden repeated an invitation for Brazil to send a delegation to the United States to obtain more technical and political details on the case, Chagas said. She said Brazil accepted the proposal but has not decided who will go or when.

Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported earlier this month the NSA targeted Latin American countries with spying programs that can monitor billions of emails and phone calls for suspicious activity, citing documents leaked by Edward Snowden, a fugitive former U.S. intelligence contractor.

Latin American countries fumed at what they considered a violation of their sovereignty and demanded explanations and an apology.

The American ambassador in Brazil, Thomas Shannon, acknowledged that the United States collects large amounts of data on email traffic but does not access the content of messages or conduct the monitoring on Brazilian territory. He said the reports did not paint an accurate picture of U.S. information gathering.

In Brazil, the United States' largest trading partner in South America, angry senators questioned a state visit Rousseff plans to make to Washington in October and a billion-dollar purchase of U.S.-made fighter jets Brazil has been considering.

Rousseff told Biden her visit is still on and she hoped the spying matter will be cleared up by then, Chagas said.

"The privacy of citizens and the sovereignty of countries cannot be infringed in the name of security," Rousseff said to Biden, according to her minister.

Tumblr: Porn blogs can stay, but they'll be mostly hidden

Social media

Tumblr

Tumblr

Logged-out users won't be seeing many naughty posts in the Tumblr Dashboard.

Since the moment it was announced that Yahoo would acquire Tumblr, people have been asking "But what will happen to the porn?" Naughty question, sure, but we finally know the answer.

Porn is being allowed to stay hidden under Tumblr's virtual rug, meaning that many adult-oriented blogs are becoming difficult to discover.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer pledged "not to screw it up" when the search giant snagged the rowdy blogging platform last month, but users immediately worried that their fun would quickly be spoiled. Now Tumblr seems to be making attempts to maintain a middle ground ? to keep the porn, but to have a clean site, too.

"Tumblr's longstanding policy regarding NSFW content has not changed and emphasizes the importance of free expression," a Tumblr spokesperson tells NBC News. "As addressed in these policies, we are constantly taking measures to ensure our users can avoid this content unless they'd like to see it." One of those measures, which appears to be quite recent, involves how prominently blogs containing nudity, mature, or adult-oriented content are featured.

Valleywag's Sam Biddle was among the first to notice that Tumblr's starting to put porn "where no one can find it." According to a help document about "understanding NSFW and adult blogs" on Tumblr, blogs which focus on adult-oriented content are no longer listed in search results, shown on tag pages, and more.

Following Yahoo's acquisition of Tumblr, adult-oriented content is now split into two distinct groups, mind you: NSFW blogs, which "contain ?occasional? nudity or mature/adult-oriented content," and adult blogs, which "contain substantial ?nudity or mature/adult-oriented content." Bloggers are encouraged to flag their own blogs accordingly through the Tumblr settings and are cautioned that Tumblr staff may take care of the matter themselves if bloggers fail to do so.

Tumblr chart

Tumblr

A chart breaks down how blogs with adult-oriented content are now being treated on Tumblr.

Posts on blogs flagged as NSFW will not appear in prominent places such as the Dashboards of logged-out users or on tag pages or mobile apps of individuals who do not follow them. Posts on blogs tagged as adult will not appear in the Dashboards of logged-out users, on tag pages or mobile apps of individuals who do not follow them, on the tag pages of users who do follow them, or in Tumblr search results. They will also not be indexed by search engines.

In other words: It will be extremely challenging for anyone to find posts made on "adult" Tumblr blogs which they do not follow or for which they do not know the URL.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on Twitter, subscribing to her Facebook posts, or circling her on Google+.

'Couples Therapy' Recap: Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra Were Right to Call Off the Wedding

Catelynn Lowell Tyler Baltierra Couples TherapyWell, we finally know why Teen Mom stars Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra called off their wedding. This week's Couples Therapy?gave us a look at the tough childhoods the Michigan teenagers went through. It also let us in on a private session between Tyler and celebrity therapist Jenn Berman.

And from the way Tyler was talking to Berman, there's no way he should marry Catelynn.

Tyler admitted to Berman that he sometimes wonders if he and Catelynn both settled for each other ... and if they're together because they're afraid of being with someone else. Not only are they bound as childhood sweethearts who had a child together and went through the difficult process of adoption, but they both came from tough childhoods.

During group therapy, Tyler revealed that he remembers his father finally coming home from prison when he was just 8 years old, only to then have to watch his dad tackled by police outside his home. At 8 years old, he was outside trying to pull the cops off his dad.

Catelynn's childhood memories were just as painful. She told the group that she remembered wild parties at her home when she was a little girl, often finding her mom passed out. At times Catelynn wasn't able to rouse her mom, and she feared she was dead. It wasn't until she met Tyler that Catelynn seems to have found any real happiness:

I had to go to Tyler's house, and thank God his mom, like saved me She took me in like her own and just let me live there.

But with the many people who have failed her over the years, Catelynn fears Tyler leaving her. He, on the other hand, fears letting her down.

Watching him talk to Berman, it's obvious Tyler feels trapped because he DOES love Catelynn, and he doesn't want to hurt her. But he dropped a lot of words tonight that are giant red flags for any couple getting married, words like "settling" and "easier just to."

More From The Stir: 'Couples Therapy' Recap: Tyler Baltierra Was Born for This

Those are NOT words you hear from an excited groom, someone who is ready to commit to a marriage. They ARE words you hear from someone destined for divorce.

Fortunately for these kids, Tyler has the maturity to put his foot down. He went to Catelynn and admitted he just isn't ready, and that he doesn't think she's ready either.

It was hard to watch Catelynn hide in bed and cry as her world fell apart. But knowing that these two are still together in real life (they just passed the nine-year mark of their anniversary) even though their wedding date has come and gone without them getting hitched, we do know they made it through this tough time.

And if they can make it through this, that should answer a lot of Tyler's questions.

What do you think of Tyler breaking things off?

McCaffery: Experience should carry most value in Sixers' coach search

Pat Croce once learned the hard way that 'experience is worth its weight in gold' when it comes to head coaching candidates for the 76ers. New GM Sam Hinkie would do well to remember that. (Associated Press file)

Pat Croce, who didn?t make many business or basketball mistakes, was to make one in 1996.

Relatively new to the control of the 76ers, Croce knew a coaching change was required, and he?d convinced himself that Johnny Davis, a short-time assistant for the Portland Trail Blazers, was ready to be a star in the profession. A year later, the Sixers were ? ready? ? 22-and-60, and even with must-watch rookie Allen Iverson, they were so bloody uninteresting that Croce, who rarely needed an excuse, had a new reason to run around screaming.

So Davis was fired, and Croce swore he would never repeat the error. And while attempting to recruit several of the most accomplished coaches in basketball, he came to appreciate Larry Brown, he of the 18-pound head-coaching portfolio. It was then that Croce hollered the first known Philadelphia-sports reference to the value of precious metals, years before Jeffrey Lurie?s legendary muffed attempt.

?I told you that experience is worth its weight in gold,? Croce would say, while presenting Brown. ?And we went after the gold standard of experience.?

Croce?s second coaching choice would work, with Brown able to maximize the on-court value of the undisciplined Iverson. Within four years, Brown had coached ? coached being the accurate verb ? the Sixers in the NBA Finals.

They?re still looking for that championship, the Sixers are, and they hint they?ll hire a coach as part of that plan. But Friday will be their 92nd day without a head coach since the resignation of Doug Collins, he of the Brown-like experience. Since then, the Sixers have fired a general manager, hired a general manager, reassigned a CEO, hired a CEO, scouted possible draft choices, conducted a draft and entered a team in a summer league. Sam Hinkie, the new GM, has conducted his search in private, lest too many basketball fans have the urge to join the conversation. And why would the Sixers, ever so popular, need that? Still, the names of some potential candidates have surfaced. And if the list is accurate, it is best described in two words: Davis, Johnny.

Hinkie could yet run the back-door for a dunk. That?s what he did after sneaking into the draft, then winning the thing with a succession of courageous transactions. But there are enough indicators to chart his preferences. And if the message-waiting lights on the smartphones of George Karl and ? don?t you know? ? Brown are not flashing, it?s not Hinkie texting.

Reports are that Hinkie is interested in, among others, Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga, who would have the distinction of being both the second-most qualified Jay and the second-most qualified Larranaga. That?s because his father, Jim Larranaga, and Villanova coach Jay Wright both have coached basketball teams into the NCAA?s Final Four. Not that J-Lar is necessarily the next J-Davis, for he has been a D-League head coach and has useful international-ball head-coaching experience. Nonetheless, when the Celtics had a chance to promote him to replace Doc Rivers, they hired as sought-after candidate as there was in the sport, Brad Stevens of Butler. By contrast, instead of trying to similarly recruit Wright, who would be an inspired selection, the Sixers are considering his former assistant, Eddie Pinckney.

Others are being mentioned, including Atlanta assistants Kenny Atkinson and Quin Snyder, who has been cleansed after being scandalized as the head coach at Missouri. Considering those alternatives, the Sixers? most appealing option would be to promote Collins? associate head coach Michael Curry, who has been an NBA player and head coach and has been popular among the remaining Sixers.

There is no instruction manual for hiring a successful NBA head coach. In 1977, the Sixers hired entry-level Billy Cunningham, who by 1983 was inhaling a $100 championship-victory cigar. And Erik Spoelstra had no head coaching experience before being hired by the Heat, yet he has coached the last two NBA champions. Continued...

Davis: Shea catches break; others short on time

Brek Shea found some badly needed relief

Brek Shea?s late, game-winning finish was calm stuff, but far from perfect; had Ticos? goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton stood his ground and not committed to his left, the big U.S. winger?s shot probably would have nailed him right in the chest.

Then again, it doesn?t matter. Shea (pictured) did what he does when at his best, seeing a chance to run directly at goal. And then he manufactured a moment that mattered, turning the opportunity into a goal ? and strike that will help keep him in the World Cup roster conversation. He needed it something awful after that startling poor afternoon against Cuba.

As we keep saying, this tournament is really all about helping to assess which players are moving up in the depth chart ahead of next May?s important roster decision. Speaking of which ?

Some players are running out of time

Alejandro Bedoya and Michael Parkhurst, combining along the U.S. right side, failed to do much at all. And that may be it for them, because the matches are only going to get tougher, and neither have made an impact on the tournament.

Jose Torres was useful in the middle for a half ? he played nominally on the left, but spent most of the evening leaning well inside ? but his influence faded after intermission. So, like a lot of U.S. men, his evening summation rated a solid ?Meh.?

(MORE: United States nicks Costa Rica on a late goal)

Chris Wondolowski probably needed to be more active and find another portal or two into the impact creation zone. But two previous, encouraging performances means the San Jose Earthquakes striker has more wiggle room. One unproductive night won?t kill him at this point.

Generally, the United States lacked for ideas on the attack. The contest begged for some problem solving; Costa Rica?s 5-4-1 was tough stuff to break down, especially on a warm, muggy night that demanded a certain efficiency in movement off the ball.

Stuart Holden still has a long way to go

The Bolton midfielder played all 90 minutes, and that?s a huge step. But his recovery remains a clear work in progress.

Holden?s technical work in the midfield was fine. It?s not like he lost the ball a lot or failed to track or ?hid? behind opponents the way players leaking confidence sometimes will. But his choices on the ball tell a tale of flagging aggression, of timing that just isn?t where it needs to be. Overall, there is just a smidge of lacking confidence.

Too many of his passes were safe, and too many opportunities to drive forward from the central midfield areas were passed over. Again, this isn?t a deal-killer. He?s just not there yet.

Who had good nights in the U.S. shirt?

Beyond Shea?s big moment ? Clarence Goodson had a decent enough night in the back, organizing the back line, steering away a few dangerous balls and joining the attack periodically. Michael Orozco, playing alongside, proved dependable enough.

Mix Diskerud, playing alongside Holden in the middle of a 4-4-2, was easily the better of the central pairing. Torres, as noted earlier, was influential in possession over the first 45. And Donovan had a nice moment here and there, none better than his savvy, early ball that put Shea clean through.

Young goalkeeper Sean Johnson made the big save that mattered, but his communication with the back line looked dodgy, as did a couple of choices on getting off his line.

Mike Miller amnesty sign of tighter times for NBA payrolls

Published Tuesday, Jul 16, 2013 at 3:38 pm EDT Last updated 6 hours and 30 minutes ago

In a sign of the increasingly tighter times when it comes to NBA payrolls, the Heat announced on Tuesday that they would exercise the amnesty clause on guard Mike Miller, cutting him from the team he helped to two championships in two years.

But in making the move, the Heat will have Miller?s $6.2 million contract removed from its books this year, and will be able to avoid the $6.6 million hit he would have cost the team had he opted in for next season. Under amnesty rules, the Heat still have to pay Miller the remainder of his contract, but for luxury tax purposes, Miller?s deal won?t count.

Under the new tax rules, teams are required to pay an escalating amount based on how high over the $71.7 million tax threshold they are. Before cutting Miller, the Heat was at $86.5 million in payroll, which would have worked out to a tax bill of a little more than $28 million.

Because cutting Miller?s contract keeps the Heat within the second zone of tax escalation, cutting his contract pays off exponentially. Without Miller, the tax bill drops to about $11 million. There was some speculation that team owner Mickey Arison?who faced the same dilemma in regards to Miller last year?would keep Miller because the team is coming off back-to-back titles.

The Heat had hoped to move Miller in a trade before finally using the amnesty clause on him.

In a statement, Heat president Pat Riley said, ?After many discussions internally and a sincere effort to explore the trade market, we made a very difficult decision to use our Amnesty provision on Mike Miller. Mike had an incredible impact on the Miami Heat; helping us to three finals appearances and winning back-to-back World Championships. This was a very difficult decision for me personally, the Arison family, Erik (Spoelstra) and the entire Miami Heat organization. Mike was one of the best we have ever had here, and will be sorely missed.?

Miller, who has been bothered by a back injury for the last two years, averaged just 3.4 points in the playoffs this year, but he played 21.7 minutes the seven Finals games, including five as a starter. He shot 61.1 percent from the 3-point line in the series.

It is possible that Miller will still be in the league. He first must go through a 48-hour waiver process in which teams under the salary cap can bid on him. Once that process passes, Miller will be an unrestricted free agent, but he can?t re-sign with Miami. Miller will consider retirement, too.

Youth homicide rate hits 30-year low, but it's not good news for everyone

The homicide rate for individuals aged 10 to 24 was 7.5 per 100,000 young people in 2010, according to a new study. Overall however, declines in the rate have slowed since 2000.

Youth homicide rates have hit a 30-year low, according to a new CDC report. After a sharp increase in the late 1980s and early 1990s ? hitting a high in 1993 ? the homicide rate has continued to fall, but since 2000, the decline has slowed considerably, dropping only about 1 percent per year.

Youth homicide rates have hit a 30-year low, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that examined data from 1981 to 2010.

After a sharp increase in the late 1980s and early 1990s ? hitting a high in 1993 ? the rate has continued to fall.

That's the good news. But homicides, about 80 percent of them due to firearms, are still identified as one of the three leading causes of death for youths aged 10 to 24, the age range used in the study. And since 2000, the decline has slowed considerably, dropping only about 1 percent a year.

There are also still large disparities among different groups, with blacks, males, and youths aged 20 to 24 all much more likely to be homicide victims. And the declines in homicide rates for those at-risk groups have been even slower than for their peers.

"If we really want to reenergize the declines in youth homicide and try to knock it off where it is right now as the third leading cause of death for young people, we need to be more proactive and focus on primary prevention" of violence, says Corinne Ferdon, a behavioral scientist with the CDC's Division of Violence Prevention and an author of the report.

Since 1981, the report shows the homicide rate fluctuating considerably, with the biggest changes in the 1980s and '90s. Between 1985 and 1993, for instance, there was a steep rise of 83 percent, up to 15.9 homicides per 100,000 young people. Then, in the following five years, there was a 43 percent drop.

While the CDC analysis didn't identify reasons behind these trends, Dr. Ferdon says that other research has pointed toward things like the crack cocaine epidemic, drug-related crime, an increase in weapon carrying, and a weak economy as some of the factors in the sharp rise in homicides in the late ?80s and early ?90s. As those factors abated, the homicide rate dropped sharply.

"What gives us a little bit of concern is that that really promising decline that began started to slow down around 2000," Ferdon says. "Between 2000 and 2010, we continued to see a decline, but it was significantly slower ? slower than we would like."

In 2010, the most recent year for which the report has statistics, the homicide rate for individuals aged 10 to 24 was 7.5 per 100,000 ? the lowest in the 30-year period studied.

But it was much higher for males (12.7 per 100,000), individuals aged 20-24 (13.2 per 100,000), and blacks (28.8 per 100,000).

"What this report helps us see is where we need to focus our efforts," Ferdon says. The prevention strategies with the highest success rates, she says, are those that take a comprehensive approach, since there isn't a single cause in isolation that drives youth violence. School-, family-, and community-based programs that help address broad issues like crime and poverty all help, says Ferdon, who especially lauds "primary prevention" strategies that aim to get youths off a trajectory toward violence at a young age.

"We have to be in part engaging these higher-risk groups, helping them gain access to these primary prevention approaches," says Ferdon.
